Clydesdale’s
4’s and 8’s
Head of the River Race Clydesdale’s 4’s and 8’s HoRR takes root from the original Fours Head of the Clyde as started by Glasgow University in 1950. Such was the success of the early events that assistance was required in the logistics, planning and organisation. The University students asked Peter Grieve, a former President and Life Member of CARC, for help and it was duly given. Students came and went, but Peter remained until ultimately the event was organised by Peter with the assistance of members from Clydesdale.
In 1997, eights were invited to compete on the traditional course of 4000m which starts on the straight above Dalmarnock bridge and finishes at Nelson’s Monument in Glasgow Green. It is a timed processional race and is open to all grades of rowing. Originally, there were pennants for clinker and shells only.
It was the first open Head of the River Race in Scotland and requires skill in rowing and coxing over its sinuous course. The race has enjoyed entries from many clubs in Scotland and other parts of the UK. One notable entry was from Nottingham BC which had on board the three times World Champion Peter Haining. Clydesdale member Gillian Lyndsay, Olympian and World Champion, raced on a number of occasions.
So, should you take part and complete the course, take a moment to reflect on those who have raced down this river before you and wonder if your efforts will be noted in the same light.
