Rowing on the Clyde started long before anyone can remember, and from this, racing evolved. In 1857 the first known Main Regatta took place on the Clyde. It was a huge event as back in those days, football and horseracing were not as popular, so many people bet on rowing! .People would come to Glasgow Green and sit along the river bank to watch the races.

‘The Annual Regatta of the Clydesdale Amateur Rowing’ club held in 1862. The numbers of spectators attending give a good impression of the extent public awareness and attraction of the sport. The finish was around the area where Clydesdale’s boathouse was eventually built in 1905. The monument to the right still stands in Glasgow Green today, helping to place the picture. On September 27th 1862, ‘The Illustrated London News’ (above) reported on the “annual regatta of the Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club”, describing it as the “Scottish Henley”. This conveys the extent of rowing on the Clyde at that time.

Today, the Main Regatta is still a prestigious event, run over the same course as in 1857. The “Long” course is 1500m, starting a Polmadie bridge and finishing as Clydesdale Boathouse. The “Short” course is from just above the suspension bridge.
