The Diamond Jubilee Rowing Championships took place at Dorney Lake on 20-21 October 2012. Three members of the Clydesdale Elite Women’s group performed with distinction on Sunday at this event, finishing a superb 2nd overall in W U23 4x. The scratch composite crew of Rosie Young, Claire McKeown, Pauline McGovern and Rebecca Chin from Agecroft RC had barely 1000m of pre-race paddling together earlier in the day, when they were thrust into the thick of it completing a 1900m time-trial, followed by 2x2km side by side races against current World and Olympic Champions from a variety of other clubs.
The standard of competition was extremely high, and racing was very tight. ‘Start’ athletes Claire and Rebecca, who rowed together at the World U23 Championships earlier in the year, along with British U23 sculling champion Rosie, are all experienced at this level and formed the backbone of the crew. But the surprise performer of the day was Pauline from the Start group, who, despite the enormity of the situation before her, remained calm and collected throughout. The crew raised their game considerably in the final to finish in 2nd place. The leading boat in this category was a Tees composite crew containing Olympic Gold Medallist Kat Copeland.
