Club Circuits

Club circuit training will continue to be run outdoors on Tuesday nights at 6pm at the boathouse during September. Members of all squads are strongly encouraged to attend and you will almost certainly benefit from the varied and demanding workout. The circuit session will move to indoor gym work at Glasgow Caledonian University commencing Tuesday 29th September and at the later time of 7:15pm. This is further into the month than in previous years, but the hope is that the continuity we have had throughout the summer months will give people a head start to the winter training.

Clydesdale Corporate Regatta Champions 2015!

The sun shone on this year’s Corporate Regatta and the Clubhouse was filled with enthusiastic Corporate crews and excited supporters. Ten crews battled it out in the Group stages in the morning, with eight crews successfully going forward to the final stages. Over lunch, those crews fuelled with burgers from the BBQ, tackled the Ergo Challenge and hardly had time to draw breath before getting back on the water for the final races. The quarter and semi finals were keenly contested, with the final race taking place between Kraken Rowers (Andritz Hydro Hammerfest) and Davy Jones’ Tentacles (sportscotland), with Kraken Rowers overcoming the opposition to win the 2015 Clydesdale Corporate Regatta.

The crew costumes were particularly entertaining this year: Pirates of the Clyde (Sgurr Energy) as pirates; Cool Rowings (GSK) adopted a Jamaican theme, with matching rasta hats; The Mustard and Star-Lords proudly sported corporate colours; Kraken Rowers (Andritz Hydro Hammerfest) wore stylish T-shirts; Universally Challenged (AFRC) chose formal wear and a black tie approach; Mystery Men (Donaldson Associates) were coordinated in white; Sport Scotland chose a nautical theme, complete with moustaches, tattoos, cutlasses and eye patches; and the Sgurr’vy Mermen (Sgurr Energy) adopted a Robinson Crusoe style. A special prize was awarded to the best dressed crew, which this year was won by Pirates of the Clyde.

Joint winners of the Ergo Challenge were Star-Lords (Star Refrigeration) and Davy Jones’ Tentacles (sportscotland). Well done to all!

Our thanks go to all competitors and supporters for a great day, all coaches and helpers for making the weeks of training so much fun and to our regatta organising team led by Sally Nicholson for another tremendous event.

Marlow Regatta and Women’s Henley Regatta

A small team of athletes from Clydesdale travelled down south last weekend to attend Marlow Regatta and Women’s Henley.

The quad of Danny Morris, Giacomo Galano, Euan Malone and Ryan Morrison had some great racing in the Senior Coxless Quad event on Dorney Lake at Marlow Regatta.  After finishing 4th in the time trial, a very competitive final saw the Clydesdale crew finish a close 4th, behind a Windsor Boys crew and two Bath University crews.

On the same day, over at Henley, the women’s Senior Coxed Fours crew of Anna Swan, Hannah Duncan, Zoe Wilson and Emily Clough were knocked out of the event by a crew from Tideway Sculler.  It was a close race, with the winning margin recorded as just 2/3rd of a boat length.

Metropolitan Regatta

The Olympic rings decorating Eton Dorney were epic reminders of the London 2012 races held at the Metropolitan Regatta course. Nonetheless water is water and wind is wind and there was plenty of both over the weekend with some bow sinking waves!

Danny Morris and Anna Swan represented the club racing singles racing on both days. On Saturday Anna narrowly missed out on the IM2 final coming second in the reparge. Danny hailed success in the IM3 reparge with an inspirational sprint finish over the line taking him into the final.

Sunday saw Anna in the IM3 final where she led the race for the first 1800m just losing out to winning crossing the finish line less than a second behind the winner. Danny made it straight into the IM3 final with a strong performance in the heats coming fourth in the final.

Despite the long journey, both rowers were proud to represent Clydesdale ARC at this high profile event.  The event website is here.

In a competitive final, Giacomo led from the start to secure a winning margin of 3 seconds over the 2000 metre course.  Giacomo’s performance at the weekend confirms why he and coach Chris Phillips have been invited to attend GB Final Junior Trials in July.

In addition to Giacomo’s win, Ryan Morrison overcame a lingering cold last week to secure a strong 4th place in the final of J16 singles.  Here’s hoping Ryan makes a full recovery.

Euan Malone was competing in Championship singles and ranked 16th in a very competitive time trial.

All in all, it was a very successful regatta for the Junior Men’s squad – much credit goes to Coach Chris Phillips for all his work over the last few years in developing a strong squad.
